(Note to the admins list - This post made it as far as the moderator
queue, but disappeared for some reason. I left most of the meat of it
in the quoted parts)

Please explain how your freedom was imposed upon in the scope of
the entire network.

You're free to insult him right back, or ignore the text that he is
sending to you through the Internets, or leave his channel and start
another. When it comes down to it, who is he to you and why should it
matter what words he, a completely random stranger, chooses to use?

While it may be uncalled for, he's within his rights to do so. Let
it reflect on his character. The way I see it, it's one of two
scenarios: 1. He's satisfying his boredom by just trying to get a rise
out of you and get a chuckle from your reaction, but doesn't actually
mean what he's saying. or 2. He is actually a bigot, means what he
says, and is generally a big meanie. Whichever it is, he's only
reflecting badly on his own character, in your eyes, by doing what he's
doing. Don't let it get to you, 'cause, well, he wins if he succeeds.

A threat would be more worded as, "I shall find out where you live,
stalk you, wait for you to go to sleep, break in your house, and stab
you in the neck." Wishing death on someone is _NOT_ a threat because
there has to be willful intent to carry out the action stated. Your
threat to take legal action in response, however, is actually considered
to be a threat, in legal terms. If you mentioned legal action to him,
you're the one who stands to lose something in this altercation, not him.

The network provides some tools to handle "harassment" by way of
channel modes and the silence command. Your client provides a tool
called ignore. Your brain provides some tools to handle harassment as
well, since you can just mentally choose to ignore, take with a grain of
salt, and not respond to what he's saying.

Before I got this e-mail, I didn't know he existed.

What do you propose we do?

> If it's freedom you should be able to walk into that room and talk.

Yes, you are free to walk into a room and talk. If you don't like
what goes on in that room or how that room is managed, you're free to
create your own room, invite your friends, and talk there instead. If
the creator or moderator of a channel doesn't like what you're saying,
they're also free to put a gag on you, ban you, and/or kick you from
their channel, as you are free to do in your own channel. Channel
registration with Chanserv is free and open on this network.

I've done so, and so far, no problems.

You're free to leave the _entire network_ over the actions of _an
individual_ if you want. In the end, you're right, it's no skin off our
backs. It just seems kinda ... over reactive.

      Trolls are people, too.
