If you never heard back from anyone regarding this question. I
apologize for the delay... this message got lost in the fray.
Creating a channel is very simple. If you join a channel that
doesn't yet exist, it is created when you join it and the server gives
you operator status. If there are no occupants in a channel, the
channel ceases to exist. That's, in general, how IRC channels work.
Registration services adds one more layer to that concept in that
even if nobody is in the channel, when someone joins, modes are set by a
services robot, called ChanServ, to prevent that person from being given
operator status. The topic for the channel is set back to whatever it
was the last time it had occupants as well, I believe. It also sets up
any other settings that you may have specified in when configuring your
channel with ChanServ. Registration services effectively "marks your
territory" and allows you to continue ownership of the channel even if
you are not around.
Unused channels are automatically expired and unregistered after 30
days of non-use.
In order to register a channel, you must first register your
nickname; with the help of NickServ. Instructions for registering your
nickname can be obtained directly form NickServ on IRC, using NickServ's
help system. You communicate with the services bots by sending them
private messages. For example, here's how to access the help system:
/msg nickserv help
Most clients allow you to skip the "msg " part and just do:
/nickserv help
Some clients even shortcut that a little further and allow you to use:
/ns help
Figure out which one best works for you and your IRC client.
After issuing the help command, you should see a response from
nickserv, either in a separate query tab in your client or in your
"Status" tab. The "/ns help" command, by itself, just causes nickserv
to list all of the rest of the commands that it has. To get more
detailed help on each command, use the command name, as listed, as an
argument to the help command. For example, to have it print more
detailed help on the "register" command, type:
/ns help register
The same help system is available from chanserv in reference to
registering and maintaining channels:
/msg chanserv help
or
/chanserv help
or
/cs help
There are a few other services bots that you would have access to
with a registered nickname: BotServ and MemoServ Feel free to check
out their help systems as well.
Nickname registrations expire after 60 days of not identifying with
nickserv. Be sure that after you register, every time you are on IRC,
you "identify" or log into nickserv. Most clients have a "password"
field in the connection settings, and that password gets redirected to
nickserv automatically by the server when you connect. Otherwise, you
would need to use the nickserv identify command.
If a nickname of a person who is the founder of a channel expires,
the channel is also deleted from ChanServ. Setting a successor for the
channel helps to prevent this scenario by providing someone you trust to
become the founder of your channel should your nickname expire.
If you have any other questions, you can ask again here, or you can
join the #AnthroChat channel on IRC and ask your question. Be mindful
that only people with operator status in #AnthroChat are there to help.
Anyone else may or may not provide useful information in a courteous
manner.
