There's a crash bug that's triggered by a specific string of
characters, either being pasted into a chat box (by you) or by someone
sending them to you in any fashion (in a topic, in a private message, in
a channel, or what have you). It affects both Pidgin and XChat because
they both rely on the same library where the bug actually exists
(Pango). You can find some information about it here:

I'm not sure if the bug has been fixed, upstream in Pango, or if
either Pidgin or XChat have created work-arounds. Check for a new
version of Pidgin. It's always good to keep software up to date. If
the problem persists, I recommend using an alternative client for
connecting to IRC.
Also, apologies for this response taking so long. Our mailing list
software wasn't running, and nobody seemed to notice.
